Moroccan Imam & Pedophilia in Tangier
Growing up in Torino, Italy (where my father was working) when I was a kid, I heard about many scandals of priests abusing kids in the Catholic Church. But when I came back to live in Morocco, I realized that these kinds of scandals exist in my Moroccan culture. Hell YES, it exists; I couldn't believe it either! The only difference between them was that people weren't talking about it, especially government-controlled state television. They were only airing all the international catastrophes and downplaying the national ones.
Nowadays, the Internet has changed journalism, and everybody can pretend to be a journalist by recording an incident, posting it online, and making it go viral. I can't bless enough the inventor of the Internet who has changed the lives of many generations worldwide.
One of the stories that went viral lately in Morocco was about an imam (Islamic prayer leader) of a mosque in Morocco who confessed to raping six minors. He was supposed to be teaching them the Qur'an, but he was giving them a different type of lesson. One of the children's mothers in the village of Al-Zumaij in Morocco exposed the scandal when she revealed that the imam had sexually assaulted her daughter before she was added to other children who told similar stories.
Police arrested the 43-year-old imam, who is married and has three children (Thank God he was married, imagine if he was single?!). According to the version of the minors, the imam of the mosque used to follow them to the mosque's toilet to assault them sexually, and if they refused to fulfill his whims, he would beat them.
According to a local media outlet, the victims' fathers complained that their daughters were subjected to indecent sexual assault by the imam for four years. Due to their ignorance and fear, they did not disclose what happened. In addition to the threat that the Islamic "jurist" was exercising his power over them and this kind of assault is very common in Moroccan and Arab societies and not as punishable as they are in the West.
Since Islam allows men to marry four wives at once, so many guys who rape or take the virginity of Moroccan girls end up getting married to them. In many other cases, the parents drop the charges in exchange for money, so the case file gets classified, and some others don't want to press charges not to be the talk of the town in Morocco where the gossip RULES!
